Pardoned inmate arrested for burglary days after being set free by Gov. Adeleke
According to a report from THE NATION news, in a startling turn of events, a former inmate recently pardoned by Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has been arrested for alleged burglary and theft, just eight days after his release.
On December 26, 2024, Governor Adeleke exercised his prerogative of mercy, pardoning 53 convicts in celebration of the Christmas season.
This decision was based on the recommendations of the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.
Among those pardoned was Sunday Omisakin, listed as number 8 on the governor’s list.
Omisakin had been convicted of a minor offense and was granted an outright pardon.
On January 3, 2025, Omisakin was arrested for allegedly breaking into the residence of Shittu Damilare in the Al-Medinat Area, Iludun, Osogbo.
He is accused of stealing a plasma television valued at N600,000.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Kayode Adeoye, stated that the offense is contrary to and punishable under sections 411(1)(2), 363, and 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Vol. II, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.
Omisakin was arraigned before the Osun State Magistrate Court in Osogbo, presided over by Magistrate Adekanmi Adeyeba, on two counts of burglary and theft.
He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
His counsel, Najite Okobe, requested that the court grant him bail on liberal terms.
However, the prosecutor opposed the bail application, highlighting that Omisakin had been recently pardoned by the governor and had not completed his previous jail term.
Magistrate Adeyeba denied the bail application and ordered that Omisakin be remanded in the Ilesa Correctional Facility.
The case was adjourned to January 10, 2025, for further hearing.
