Outrage as police arrest three Odulu leaders over alleged cow death
By Ainoko Isaac
Tension is rising in Odulu village, Bassa Local Government Area of Kogi State, following the arrest of three prominent community members by officers of the Oguma Divisional Police Headquarters.
Those arrested are community leader Mr. Zekeri Omede, farmer Mr. Ilemona, and the Chief of Bassa, Maisia Mazi.
The arrests reportedly followed a complaint by Fulani herders who alleged that one of their cows was found dead on a farm in the community. Acting on the complaint, police officers moved into the village and detained the three men.
As of the time of reporting, all efforts to secure their release on bail have failed, with police maintaining that investigations are ongoing.
Reacting to the development, a concerned indigene, Shedrach Ibrahim, strongly condemned the arrests, describing them as unjust and premature. He questioned why the police would detain respected community members without first establishing clear evidence linking them to the alleged incident.
He further warned that such actions risk deepening tensions in the area and eroding public trust in law enforcement.
Ibrahim called on the Commissioner of Police in Kogi State to urgently intervene, ensure the release of the detained individuals where appropriate, and direct the Oguma Divisional Police Headquarters to strictly adhere to due process and the rule of law.
